Two Richmond residents died today and two other people were hurt in a three-vehicle accident in Macomb Township, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities did not release victims’ names pending family notification, but one was a 75-year-old woman; the other a 77-year-old man. They were riding in the same vehicle when the accident occurred about noon on 23 Mile at Romeo Plank, the sheriff’s office said.
A 2008 GMC Envoy was stopped for a traffic signal westbound on 23 Mile in the center turn lane, waiting to turn south onto Romeo Plank. A 1992 Grand Marquis, occupied by the Richmond residents, also was westbound on 23 Mile and was unable to stop. Their vehicle hit the Envoy, authorities said.
They said the Grand Marquis then veered into the eastbound lane of 23 Mile and hit an eastbound Dodge Caravan head-on. Two people in the Caravan were taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Clinton Township. The Envoy driver was released at the scene.
Authorities said alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The Richmond residents were not wearing seat belts, authorities said.
